Getting Started with Hashimotos

I made a lot of mistakes when I started my Hashimotos journey. Well, maybe not mistakes. They were a learning opportunity at the very least. I think that I share so much of what I learned is that I don’t want people to struggle like I did for over 7 years. I share what worked, what didn’t, the best advice I have, and ultimately let people make the decision on how they want to navigate it.

Before You Begin

I know it can be incredibly frustrating getting started. Maybe your doctor is helpful and has you on the right path. Maybe not. But the thing I stress to people the MOST is that you’ve spent a lot of your life in the habits you’re in right now. Don’t feel like you have to change everything overnight. Decide on the approach that’s best for you and implement changes over time!

Understand What Hashimotos IS

  • Hashimotos is an AUTOIMMUNE that attacks the thyroid

  • It IS NOT the same as Hypothyroidism

  • Hashimotos IS a lifelong condition that will evolve over time so understanding what your body truly needs will be your best defense when it comes to success.

Spending time understanding my symptoms, what my body was telling me, and putting a plan into place for success, and then TRACKING has been the best success I’ve had in my journey. I couldn’t just try something and wonder if it worked. I had to try ONE thing, track the response, and make changes over time. It helped me understand what the cause and effect were, how my body was responding, and what was giving me the success I was truly looking for.

When I tell you that starting small was the best thing I ever did, I truly mean it. Sometimes we change everything over night and it’s hard to pinpoint what worked and what didn’t! Here are just a few of the changes I started with:

  • I brought carbs back into my nutrition plan

  • I calculated my appropriate caloric intake (because most people under eat)

  • I started removing the BIG trigger foods and then slowly started adjusting other inflammatory foods.

  • I added in the micronutrients that my body was lacking (like magnesium, selenium, zinc, etc…)

  • I swapped out other tox and gluten products in my home (like my cookware and skin care)

  • I started spending more time on self care

Don’t be overwhelmed by that list

  • Pick one thing to focus on

  • Make small changes in that area over weeks or months

  • Understand that this is your journey and put blinders on to anything else you may be hearing and seeing
