The Best Diet for Hashimotos and Thyroid Disease

Million dollar question and I get asked every single day :

"What is the best diet to lose weight with hashimotos and thyroid issues"

My answer every single time - "it depends" (and this is why so many people are frustrated with the conflicing diet information when they try to do their own research on the internet.

Here's the very tricky thing. So many times we hear that if you go gluten free or dairy free that you should almost certainly lose weight. For most, that's just not the case.

Here are a few mistakes that people make:

  • You haven't done a full healing protocol. While going gluten and dairy free is amazing, sometimes your body needs a full healing protocol (which includes temporary supplements) before you can resume a lifstyle diet plan.

  • They're not eating enough. A lot of diet culture has scared people into eating too few calories. With hashimotos or thyroid issues, if you under eat you will keep your body in fatigue. Fatigue = inflammation. Inflammation = weight gain and other negative responses. Make sure you fuel your body appropriately.

  • Macros - while I don't believe in obsessively tracking my macros, I do think it's really important to understand what kind of fuel sources you need in your daily life. If you're over 40, fats and proteins are going to be higher than carbs. If you're highly inflamed, you're going to need to switch your metabolic fuel source, and more. It's important to know what makeup of your food is there so that you can implement that in a lifestyle way.

I shared on my instagram on Friday night that it was pizza night. Pizza night is something that is sacred in our home. But, before I was in remission, food (any kind of food) brought me so much emotional fear. I gained weight with everything I saw. I was inflamed by everything I ate. And I had this fear based reaction about food because it created so much stress in my life.

Trust me when I say it doesn't have to be this way. Go through the healing process with food. Allow your body to truly heal so that it can tolerate other foods and you can have a better emotional relationship with food.

What is a true healing protocol?

  • I recommend a gut healing or inflammation elimination diet plan for 30-60 days. This is not an AIP protocol, but it is a healing protocol that eliminates some of the most inflammatory foods. If you need a guide on how to do this, I have a great Inflammation Elimination Meal Plan Guide that walks you through all of this.

  • I recommend gut healing supplements to compliment the diet healing plan. These supplements heal your leaky gut, aid in digestions, assist with brain clarify, and restore good gut bacteria. Some of the best gut stacks are from Bioptimizers, and I add on their Massenzymes for digestive support.

  • When you are doing a healing protocol, make sure to set your calorie intake appropriately. Sometimes people see food eliminations and they inherently eat less. Do not make this mistake! Make sure you set your intake and macros appropriately to heal and fuel your body at the same time.

If you need 1:1 or guided assistance on any of this information, I work with people on this a lot in my full hashimotos and thyroid course.

If you're someone who needs a more affordable solution or to baby step your way into it, my mini course may be a good place to start.
